Super Baby

Grandma "Imma" Salminen holds Ezra after 2 long weeks

No more oxygen!

We love you, Ezra Monroe

No more oxygen! Today Ezra moved one step closer to coming home. After having been on oxygen for almost 2 weeks, this afternoon he is breathing on his own accord. Way to go, baby! He had just about had it with the nasal cannula he had to wear and he pulled it at constantly. All those tubes are finally coming off. You'll notice from the pictures that he still has a feeding tube in, that runs through his nose. He is receiving some electrolytes with a wee amount of medication to help him continue to clear out his lungs from the feeding tube. Apart from that, he is off of all his medications and sedatives. The last of his IV's are being removed today.

And there's more super news: He's breastfeeding! A tough feat for many babies with breathing issues, breastfeeding does not always come easy to little ones like Ezra, especially when they have been on ventilators and had to endure tracheal tubes. Sucking and swallowing can be hard to do. But our little one is mastering the art:) With a little more practice he'll be a champ. The more he eats, the more weight he gains, and the faster we get to go home!

Josh and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Ezra has come this far only by the goodness and grace of the God we serve. God heard the prayers offered up by so many. We are the body of Christ, his arms and feet, his eyes and ears, his mouth, asking God for mercy and tenderness. This experience is a testament to the power of prayer. Remind yourselves of Ezra. Remember God's faithfulness. Remember how He listened. He's listening now.

  1. You are so right...God IS listening.
He always listens...in fact...He always responds. We sometimes have to be quiet before Him so that we can receive the gifts of His answers.
Thank you for sharing this faith journey with all of us! God's love and light have flowed through you so beautifully and permeated the walls of that hospital room right into our homes and hearts. May the love of God continue to guide you...as you return home to a God-centered life, fully focused on his plan for your lives. You are a beautiful family...you will be stronger because of this portion of your journey...you have done so well!

  3. OK - now I'm jealous that only one Grandma has gotten to hold him. Now the 4 1/2 hours of distance seems like a long time - when opportunities like this come around! So glad my favorite grandson is doing so well, and almost ready to go home. I'm looking forward to holding more than his hand soon! He is indeed handsome, and I must say resembles Josh as a baby! Hallelujah, and love to all. Grandma Rude

  4. Natalie & Josh,

Your little Ezra is beautiful & strong - just like his parents! Congratulations! We are so excited for you & have been praying for you & your little miracle often. He will be playing in your paints & steering your canoe very soon! (Not to mention riding Toyvo) Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us & allowing us to know your specific prayer needs.

You two are amazing! May this experience just add to your records of God's undying faithfulness. In a time of struggle for me, the Holy Spirit gave me a verse that truely comforted me & I think it applies well to your situation now, Psalm 77:14 "You are the God who performs miracles. You display your power among the peoples." And isn't that true today!! (The entire book of Psalm 77 is a wonderful reminder of how we need to meditate on God's amazing faithfulness in the past to get through times of doubt & fear in the present...that comforted me & I hope it will also comfort you...)

We are so delighted to hear of Ezra's progress over the weekend! Have fun lovin' your little cutie & daydream of all the adventures you will share!

Much Love - Carrie & Chad

  10. Super baby Ezra Monroe. Way to go chiquitito! We all knew he'd pull through in proper champ fashion. We have been keeping ourselves up to date with your blog and sending you heaps and heaps of positive, healing thoughts. Congratulations on all that you have done in the last couple weeks. You too, Natalie, are a Superwoman. You have endured so much and I can just imagine that you are every day so optimistic. I can't wait to share our recent birth stories and of course to get Ezra Monroe (love the name by the way) and Maeva Francine together for a date. I am so proud of you, Nat. Keep your eye on your prize!
